Thousands of notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers and other school supplies were distributed to the poor children of the Yen Bai province, which is located in the far North-Western of Vietnam. Known as one of the mountainous provinces in the North West, Yen Bai has over 180 small towns, most of which are underdeveloped and heavily rely on agricultural products such as tea plants, corn, rice plants, etc.
Following the first book shipment that landed Hai Phong port back in January 2008, on March 08 2008, VCDS brought together a book giving event with the presence of representatives from various educational institutions and major sponsors. The event marked the first official exposure of VCDS as a non-profit organization to the Vietnam public.
On November 1, 2007, members of the Vietnam Culture Development Society got together and prepared for the first shipment of donated books and journals from the US to Vietnam. More than 5000 books and journals were loaded onto a truck to be transported to New Jersey port and then finally to Haiphong port in Vietnam. This shipment contained all books and journals collected by VCDS members from its beginning days in Novermber 2006. With the support from the volunteers as well as from all the generous donors, VCDS was able to collect a considerably huge amount of English written materials for the Vietnamese readers.
2,000 books and journals were a huge number for us, a newly founded organization. But yes it was true, Dr. Theodora Rabb from the Princeton University was the generous donor. He gave us essentially the whole collection of his history books that he was able to accumulate throughout his teaching career. Dr. Rabb has been a History professor for many years in Princeton, and the collection of books and journals he donated has a great academic value for anyone interested in this subject.
